Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha were among the most loved on-screen couples and they have starred in many movies together including the blockbuster musical romantic film “Silsila” which released in 1981. Directed by Yash Chopra, the movie also starred Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan in important roles.
Despite its success as a cult classic, the filming process had its difficulties. During an emotional “I hate you” scene involving intense dialogue and tears, Rekha found herself nervous as 15,000 people watched the shoot early in the morning. Rekha found it more difficult as she requested additional preparation time but director Yash Chopra declined.
At that time, Amitabh Bachchan shared a story about James Dean with Rekha, Amitabh said that during the filming of the movie “Giant”, James also felt anxious and in order to ease it, he urinated in front of the public and thought what more can go wrong now. Amitabh said to Rekha that he didn’t mean it literally but he was sure that she must have understood what he wanted to convey. His words reassured Rekha who appreciated his encouragement and felt more composed.
When the cameras rolled, the crowd fell silent and the emotional intensity of the scene captivated everyone present. As the scene concluded with Rekha hugging Amitabh, the audience reacted by shouting “Ooooh”, highlighting the emotional impact of the moment. Rekha struggled to maintain her composure amid the overwhelming response.
The on-screen chemistry between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha in “Silsila” has long fueled rumours about a close relationship, further amplified by the intensity of their performances.
