Alcohol consumption among men often leads to destructive consequences, particularly within domestic life, where it becomes a catalyst for abuse and violence. Women in such situations bear the brunt of this behaviour, enduring emotional, physical and psychological harm. Many suffer in silence, bound by societal expectations and financial dependence, while others gather the courage to break free and seek a life of dignity and peace.
In an extraordinary story of resilience and love, two women from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, Kavita and Gunja, chose to leave behind their troubled lives and start anew by marrying each other. Both women, tired of the incessant drinking and abusive behaviour of their husbands, sought solace and understanding in each other. They first connected on Instagram and developed a friendship that lasted six years before they decided to take their relationship further.
They tied the knot at the Shiva Temple, known as Choti Kashi, in Deoria. During the ceremony, Gunja assumed the traditional role of the groom, applying vermillion on Kavita’s forehead, exchanging garlands and performing the sacred pheras.
Gunja talked about their decision and how relieved they are, she said that they both have suffered a lot because of their husbands’ drinking habits and abusive behaviour but now they have chosen a life which has peace and love. She added that they have decided to live in Gorakhpur as a couple and they will work in order to earn their livelihood.
Although they do not currently have a permanent home, the women are determined to stay together and plan to rent a place to build their new life. Their story is a testament to the power of resilience and the pursuit of happiness in the face of adversity. It also sheds light on the silent struggles of countless women trapped in toxic domestic environments, highlighting the need for greater societal support and awareness.
