Terani Vijaykumar and Gurindar Sohi might have got lost in history, until such a thing happened. Being of Indian origin, these 2 engineers were a part of team consisting of 4 inventors. They have just won a case against Apple Inc. the tech giant. This was because their patent technology was used by Apple in the processors of its devices without seeking permission from them. WARF or the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation highlighted this lawsuit in January 2014 when complaint against Apple Inc. was filed by it for using the patent without permission for enhancing performance and efficiency of their products.
These 4 engineers had come up with a technology named ‘Table-based Data Speculation Circuit For Parallel Processing Computer’ through which the device’s processing power is increased. This technology was used by Apple to power their A8X, A8 and A7 processing chips. They were used in flagship products like iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s. There would be 3 phases of this case and these include liability, damages and willful infringement. The jury hasn’t yet decided on the sum. However, the university has demanded a sum of $862.4 million.
Already, the court has directed Apple to cough up $400 million in the damage phase. However, if Apple is found to be guilty, it would have to pay another $400 million. Apple has trashed the claim by stating that it was an invalid patent. Let us see how the case progresses.
