A Holi-themed tweet was trolled by Dia Mirza in which she stated ‘call me anti-Hindu’ and now it is trending on social media, after she explained herself in an FB post which was so lengthy. In this note she ‘unequivocally’ apologized for any sentiments that were hurt by her tweet. She also appealed for respecting dissenting opinions.
Ms. Mirza stated she has equal respect for all customs, festivals and religions which are celebrated in India. She stated that severe water shortage is being experienced by various parts of India. She had read a report which stated that Maharashtra’s drought had hit over ninety lakh farmers.
She described about playing Holi as a child and stated “In a far more innocent time, when the child in me was still playing Holi with water balloons and buckets full of gulal water, it was hard to foresee that one day drought would not be just a picture of cracked earth in a school notebook but a tragedy closer home.”
Her tweet was all about compassion and empathy and she explained that we might not have solutions for solving the water scarcity problem but she believes that showing empathy for most affected ones, understanding as well as acknowledging the challenges and also taking the steps that we can, would definitely help.
This appeal was ended and she stated that the exchange of ideas, thoughts and opinions is what makes interacting with people on social media quite engaging. She adds that we must remain receptive to each other even if we disagree.
See how she contrasts water wastage during Holi with farmer suicides
The irony of the times we live in: farmers commit suicide due to drought and people waste water to 'play' #Holi.Go ahead call me anti-Hindu.
