A member of Indian Air Force’s Garuda Commando Unit, Corporal Shailabh Gaur, had to take 4 bullets to his abdomen while he was fighting terrorists at Pathankot airbase. He is so brave that he wishes to join the unit again after this. He didn’t have the courage of telling the truth to his mother and so he told her that he was patrolling the perimeter and everything was just right. This is definitely a proof of how selfless and courageous Shailabh is.
Originally he was posted near Ludhiana’s Adampur airbase but since he was a member of emergency response team of Garuda, he had to fly to Pathankot airbase a day before attack. For 20 days, Shailabh was admitted to a military hospital and now he again wishes to join the unit.
He says that he was very inspired by Hollywood movies such as ‘Rambo’ and ‘Commando’. Previous 3 generations of his family were in defense forces and thus, he too chose this career. His exceptional performance gave him entry into Air Force in the year 2010 and also got recommendation for elite Commando unit. 4 years after that, he proved his worth.
On being asked about the situation, he said that a trail was spotted by them which led them into the area. Some terrorists who were hiding there, started firing as platoon took positions. Shailabh’s friend Corporal Gursewak Singh was shot. Then, he realized that something pierced his stomach. The terrorists continued firing with AK-47’s. Even though they used mortars and lob grenades, these commandos couldn’t use any heavy weapons fearing collateral damage. The terrorists were there for destroying valuable assets of Air Force while commandos were there for protecting the area.
When terrorists moved to another location, Corporal Gaur attended to his injuries and later he fought the terrorists for around 90 minutes. After 30 minutes he realized that his abdomen was pierced by bullets.
Shailabh stated that he started vomiting and realized there were bullets in his body. In spite of that, Shailabh continued providing cover fire to fellow soldiers.
The doctors removed splinters and 4 bullets from his stomach and were surprised how he survived. Owing to injuries, 3 liters of blood was found in the abdominal cavity. He completely recovered after 6 weeks and is asked to visit the Air Force hospital at Ambala on the 17th of February for medical examination. He can join back only if he is found physically and medically fit.
