This Monday didn’t seem to have brought smile on the face of Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, as TRAI’s decision came in favor of Net Neutrality Brigade which made it clear that it won’t be allowing the Free Basics type of concepts in India. TRAI, which can also be called as a telecom watchdog, has prohibited telecom operators from imposing different rates for different portals or services available on the Internet.
Free Basics service was a concept of Facebook and he was not leaving any stone unturned in garnering support for it; however, it was getting stiff opposition from the Net Neutrality Brigade. Net neutrality is a concept as per which access to every portal or website should be charged in the same manner.
This initiative of Facebook was criticized a lot but Mark Zuckerberg was hopeful that Free Basics service would be launched in India; nevertheless, TRAI has completely said ‘No’ to Free Basics. Mark expressed his disappointment on Facebook within the 24 hours of TRAI’s decision:
