The Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal is currently basking in the success of “Chhaava” but very few know that he was not the first choice for the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Yes, you read that right! According to recent reports, the film was initially offered to Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu. However, he reportedly showed no interest in the project, leading director Laxman Utekar to approach Vicky Kaushal who ultimately took on the role and brought the Maratha warrior to life on screen.
The casting changes were not limited to the male lead. Rashmika Mandanna who plays Yesubai Bhonsale in the film was also not the original choice. Initially, the role was offered to Katrina Kaif but for reasons unknown, she was unable to take on the project.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, “Chhaava” is a grand historical drama that tells the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and a fierce warrior in his own right. Alongside Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, the film features notable performances by Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana and Divya Dutta.
The film has received widespread acclaim, even drawing praise from the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While addressing the public during an event in New Delhi, he acknowledged the impact of “Chhaava”, stating that the movie had captivated audiences across the country. He highlighted the film’s portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj’s valor, which had previously been immortalised in Shivaji Sawant’s renowned Marathi novel.
The success of “Chhaava” is evident not just in its reception but also in its box office numbers, crossing the ₹200 crore mark. The film has already been declared tax-free in Madhya Pradesh and Goa, while fans in Maharashtra continue to urge the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to grant it the same status in their state.
