The tenure of the Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has already ended with the end of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 but the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) has convinced him to continue as the head coach till the end of the T20 World Cup which is currently being played in USA and West Indies.
Rahul Dravid has made it clear to the board that he won’t be reapplying for the position and last month, the BCCI invited applications from the candidates who want to take up the job of the head coach of team India. While many overseas former cricketers such as Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming, etc. have already made it clear that they have no intentions of becoming India’s head coach, the BCCI has been left with limited options. However, the selection of a foreign coach was also a rare possibility as earlier the BCCI had made it clear that it wants a person who has a good understanding of India’s domestic cricket.
Currently, the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is being considered as the front-runner for the job especially after Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL 2024 under his mentorship.
While various reports have suggested that Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the head coach is a done deal, the KKR mentor has remained mum on this matter.
Recently, Gautam Gambhir went to Abu Dhabi where he interacted with the students of one of the sports medicine facilities of Medeor Hospital. During the event, a student asked a question in regard to Gautam Gambhir and the former Indian cricketer said that he has been asked this question many times earlier as well but he didn’t answer, however he would answer it to him. Gautam Gambhir said that he would love to coach the national team because there can’t be a bigger honour than this and it also gives a chance to represent 140 crore people across the globe.
The 42 years old former Indian cricketer further said that the blessings of 140 crore Indians can be of great help to the Indian cricketers and help them in winning the World Cup. He added that the most important thing for the Indian team is to play fearlessly.
Talking about the success that he achieved as the mentor of KKR, he said that he mainly focused on one aspect and that was trying to keep the environment of the dressing room positive which helped the team win the IPL 2024 that was their third title.
Interestingly, KKR won their earlier two titles under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir and this time they won it under his mentorship.
Will Gautam Gambhir replace Rahul Dravid as the Indian cricket team’s head coach? What do you think?
