The Hindi film industry aka Bollywood is one of the biggest movie industries of the world and with time, it has also undergone many changes. While earlier, individuals used to run the industry, now the corporate has entered Bollywood because of which the focus is more on professionalism and personal relations have taken a backseat.
Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani recently shared his thoughts on how Bollywood has evolved over the years, emphasising the simplicity and strong relationships that defined the golden era of filmmaking. In a candid interview, he narrated an anecdote involving legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra and actor Amitabh Bachchan, underscoring the value of trust and personal bonds in the industry during that time.
While discussing the making of iconic films, Nikkhil Advani recounted conversations between Yash Chopra and Amitabh Bachchan during the production of “Silsila” and “Mohabbatein”. For “Silsila”, Amitabh Bachchan asked a “decent amount” from Yash Chopra as he had to buy a house but years later, when Yash Chopra asked Big B about the remuneration that he wants for “Mohabbatein”, the legendary actor charged only Re 1, remembering the generosity of Yash Chopra during “Silsila” and it also reflected on their enduring relationship.
Nikkhil Advani reminisced about the familial atmosphere of Yash Raj Films, where filmmaking was driven by camaraderie rather than commercial calculations. He revealed that Pamela Chopra used to cook food for everyone, she would ensure that everybody’s needs were taken care of. He added that there was personal touch which made films like “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” and “Mohabbatein” unique.
However, Nikkhil Advani noted a stark contrast with today’s industry, where filmmaking often revolves around financial and strategic decisions, with personal relationships taking a backseat.
Amitabh Bachchan’s career trajectory further shows the value of relationships in Bollywood. After a dominant run in 1970s and 1980s, Amitabh Bachchan faced setbacks in 1990s, including a failed venture that left him financially strained. He approached Yash Chopra for help, asking for work.
Amitabh Bachchan later acknowledged this pivotal moment, crediting Yash Chopra for giving him a new lease on life with “Mohabbatein”. Combined with the success of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the film marked the beginning of his remarkable resurgence in the entertainment industry.
