MS Dhoni once again showcased his uncanny ability to make near-perfect calls on the Decision Review System (DRS), further reinforcing why some fans humorously refer to it as the “Dhoni Review System”. During the IPL 2025 clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, the veteran cricketer played a pivotal role in overturning an on-field decision with his sharp instincts.
The moment unfolded in the 18th over of Mumbai’s innings when CSK pacer Nathan Ellis delivered a ball that struck Mitchell Santner on the pads. Despite a strong appeal for LBW, the umpire was unmoved. Without hesitation, Ellis turned to Dhoni, who confidently signaled to captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, encouraging him to go for the review.
Trusting Dhoni’s judgment, Gaikwad opted for the DRS and the ball-tracking confirmed the accuracy of the call, showing the delivery heading straight towards the middle stump. Ellis, visibly thrilled by the decision, celebrated with MS Dhoni, acknowledging his keen eye for the game.

The former India captain’s consistency with DRS has long been a talking point, with former international umpire Anil Chaudhary praising his ability to assess decisions accurately. Speaking on a podcast last year, Anil Chaudhary noted that while it’s difficult to be correct every time with DRS, Dhoni comes remarkably close, attributing it to his deep understanding of the game. He emphasised that wicketkeepers, given their stationary position and clear line of sight, often have the best perspective on deliveries, which is why even top umpires sometimes take cues from their reactions.
Anil Chaudhary even lightheartedly suggested that if Dhoni ever decided to take up umpiring, he would excel — provided he was willing to endure long hours on the field. Dhoni’s sharp instincts behind the stumps continue to be an invaluable asset for CSK, proving that his cricketing acumen remains as sharp as ever.
