A man bought 5 kilos of gold for Rs 1.5 crore, what seemed like a deal of a lifetime turned out to be a big disappointment for him. A bullion dealer paid 1.5 to a fellow gold dealer for 5 Kg of gold, but it turned out that he bought 5 kg of ordinary iron for 1.5 crore.
The 48-year-old Chennai resident Raghuram was conned by his friend and business associate Sampath kumar of 15 years. He has filed a complaint with the city police. Sampath Kumar told Raghuram that he had smuggled 5 kilos of 24 carat gold into India, and was looking for a buyer. Raghuram knew him for trading gold bars at a discounted price for years, so he believed him and agreed to buy the gold bars.
Sampath Kumar even showed Raghuram a gold bar for sample to ensure that it’s genuine. But Raghuram didn’t realize that it was just an iron bar plated with gold.
As per the deal Raghuram gave the money to Kumar at his office on Thulasingam Street in Sowcarpet on Tuesday night and collected the gold bars. When Raghuram opened the bag, he found iron bars in it. After being conned, he reached the police station. A police officer spoke to the New Indian Express, he said,
On Tuesday, at around 6 pm, Raghuram hired a autorickshaw and went to meet Sampathkumar with Rs 1.5 crore packed in three bags. Minutes later Sampathkumar came with a bag claiming it contained gold bars. The duo exchanged the bags and left the scene.
Hardly 30 meters away, Raghuram opened the bag to realize that he was conned. He tried contacting Kumar, but by then Kumar had fled with the money.
