Delhi cops had to face a discomforting and awkward situation at the moment when Delhi HC asked them whether they actually know what is meant by sedition at the bail plea hearing of Kanhaiya Kumar. The court asked, “Everybody says 124A is very serious. Do you know what it is? It can be punishable with less than three years imprisonment or only fine or can be very serious.”
The cops confessed that they did not have any video wherein they saw Kanhaiya shouting anti-national slogans. What’s more, no tangible proof except the clip from TV channels is available with them. “Does the video recording show he was raising slogans? He says he was present, but was he raising slogans,” the court further asked.
Additionally, HC reserved order on the bail plea of Kanhaiya, asking cop how the union president of the college can be accused of sedition when anti-national slogans were raised by outsiders. Moreover, cop has received orders by a Telengana court for registering a case against Rahul Gandhi, Sitaram Yechury and Raja on the charges of sedition.
Sedition charge against leaders of opposition including Yechury has been criticized by CPI(M) on Monday. Concerns have also raised on the manner that is considered for using the clause of sedition.
According to an advocate who has filed petition in Telengana court, leaders such as Gandhi paid a visit to JNU and stood with the students who demanded the release of Kanhaiya in spite of the fact that he was accused of sedition.
