Kiran Rao’s latest directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies, has found itself embroiled in a plagiarism controversy. The film, which hit theaters on March 1, 2024, is now being compared to the 2019 Arabic movie Burqa City. The discussion gained momentum when a clip from Burqa City surfaced online, leading many to question whether Laapataa Ladies is truly an original creation.
The Arabic film follows the story of a newlywed man searching for his wife who is mistakenly replaced by another woman wearing a burqa. This striking similarity to the premise of Kiran Rao’s film where two brides are exchanged during a train journey in rural India has led to heated debates among audiences.

Following the emergence of the viral clip, social media users voiced their opinions, with some expressing disappointment over what they perceived as the lack of originality in Bollywood. Comments questioning the industry’s creative integrity flooded online platforms, with critics highlighting what they saw as yet another instance of an uncredited adaptation. However, others pointed out the film’s unique execution and praised its storytelling, particularly noting the soulful song Sajni Re by Arijit Singh.
Despite the controversy, Laapataa Ladies has garnered significant appreciation. Starring Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel and Ravi Kishan, the film transports audiences to 2001 rural India, unraveling a tale of mistaken identity and human connection. Produced under Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, the movie marked Kiran Rao’s return to direction after Dhobi Ghat.
Prior to its theatrical release, Laapataa Ladies was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023, where it received a standing ovation. Bollywood stars such as Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra and Vijay Varma also lauded the film. Furthermore, it was chosen as India’s official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars, a testament to its critical acclaim despite the ongoing plagiarism debate.
As discussions continue, Laapataa Ladies remains at the center of both admiration and controversy, with audiences left to determine whether it stands as a genuine artistic expression or an uncredited inspiration.
