India’s captain Rohit Sharma has expressed confidence in Varun Chakaravarthy’s ability to strengthen the team’s bowling attack in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The selection of the mystery spinner came as a surprise, especially as he replaced young batting talent Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad. However, Rohit justified the decision, emphasising the unique edge Varun Chakaravarthy brings to the team.
Speaking at a press conference before India’s opening game, Rohit Sharma acknowledged that Varun Chakaravarthy keeps his variations under wraps, even during net sessions. The captain hinted that the spinner prefers to unleash his skills only when it truly matters, a trait that adds an element of unpredictability to his bowling. He further stated that the team has been impressed by Varun Chakaravarthy’s performances over the past several months, which earned him a spot in the squad.
Varun Chakaravarthy’s resurgence began during the previous season of the Indian Premier League, where he finished as the highest wicket-taker. He successfully transitioned this form into the international arena, particularly excelling in the T20I format. His steady performances eventually earned him a place in the ODI squad, where he made an impact by claiming a key wicket in the second ODI against England in Cuttack.
Despite his limited experience in ODIs, Varun Chakaravarthy’s ability to pick up crucial wickets has made him a strong contender for a spot in the playing XI. With Kuldeep Yadav yet to regain top form and Jasprit Bumrah’s absence leaving a void in the pace attack, India might look to Varun Chakaravarthy as an X-factor in the tournament.
India’s Champions Trophy campaign kicks off against Bangladesh, followed by high-stakes encounters against Pakistan and New Zealand. All their matches, including potential knockout games, will be played in Dubai. It remains to be seen whether Varun Chakaravarthy will be given the opportunity to showcase his skills in the first match but with Rohit Sharma’s backing, his inclusion could prove to be a game-changer for India.
