The country witnessed some gruesome incidents in past few days in which minor girls were raped and murdered brutally. This has led people to come out on roads to express their anger.
As per the sources, on Saturday, the central government passed an ordinance that will give power to the courts of awarding death penalty to those who are found guilty of raping kids up to the age of 12 yrs.
This ordinance will amend the Evidence Act, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act under the IPC and a new provision will be introduced to give death sentence for such crimes.
The demand for such law was being made for quite long but heinous incidents that took place in Kathua (J&K) and Unnao (UP) strengthened the voices. The new ordinance will be submitted to President Ram Nath Kovind for his approval.
The Supreme Court was also told by the government on Friday that it is thinking upon the matter of making some changes in the penal law in order to introduce death sentence for the accused.
According to the sources, the government seems to be pretty determined to introduce measures that will ensure fast investigation and trial of the cases related to rape.
The minimum punishment for rape will be increased to life imprisonment while earlier it was 7-10 years of severe imprisonment.
What’s more, the punishment will increase from 10 to 20 years in cases in which girls of less than 16 yrs of age are raped; this punishment may extent to life imprisonment.
We support this decision of government. What about you?
