Australian cricket captain Steve Smith along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft had to face media wrath after ball tampering charges. Steve Smith accepted that they were involved in the illegal activity and also admitted that it was done on his suggestions.

Post admitting, all three have been banned from the cricket and the action is supposed to set an example. However, not everyone is convinced with the strict action being taken against the international players. As per them, the punishment could’ve been lighter.
Indian former cricketer Gautam Gambhir also condemned the decision of banning Steve Smith for 1 year.

He took to Twitter and shared his opinion. He tweeted-
Feel sorry for @stevesmith49 dad (in pic) other family members. Hope media n Aussie public go easy on them as families can be soft targets. More than d ban living wid this feeling of being called a cheat is a bigger punishment. #BallTamperingRow pic.twitter.com/L2sV8BgWAH

And one more..
I may be getting emotional but @stevesmith49 doesn’t look to me a cheat. Don’t know about u but I see in him a desperate leader trying to win a Test match for his country, his team. Yes, indeed, his methods were questionable but let’s not label him corrupt #BallTamperingScandal pic.twitter.com/xOxAM45QXM

Gautam Gambhir clearly defended Steve Smith’s intentions here and this is how people reacted to his tweet-

Guatam he was cheating full stop. Actions have consequences. He knew what he was doing he may not look like a cheat but his actions suggest otherwise

I'm a pakistani, but still i won't say anything in favor of him right now. Amir did a CRIME and deserved that long ban while Smith only broke rules of cricket and many people have done it before, neither of those players' boards punished them for a whole year.

Why do think so? Isn't cricket agentleman's game. How someone's respiration make such a grave mistake when u r not only representing yr country but also leading the team. Who gave him the right to hurt the spirit of game and malign the game in the name of despiration.

Disagree. If only crying could be more useful, it was now. Cheating is a cheating. There is always a reason. He should have known better.
