England’s newly appointed white ball captain Harry Brook has opened up about his decision to withdraw from the Indian Premier League just days before the 2025 season began — an action that could see him banned from the tournament for the next two years.
Harry Brook was set to play for Delhi Capitals after being signed at the mega auction held in Jeddah. However, in a surprising move, the 26 years old cricketer opted out of the league, citing his commitment to England’s demanding international schedule as the reason.
The decision came after the IPL governing council enforced a strict rule that penalises players who pull out post-auction. According to the regulation, any player who withdraws after being selected will be barred from both the league and future auctions for two seasons.
When questioned about the ban, Harry Brook made it clear that he hadn’t received any official confirmation but was prepared to accept the consequences. He acknowledged that the rule was in place for a reason and respected the board’s stance.
He further stressed that still his primary focus is on playing for England. For him, the sacrifice of financial opportunities in franchise cricket is a price he’s more than willing to pay if it means staying dedicated to his national side.
Harry Brook admitted that the decision wasn’t an easy one but with a packed international calendar ahead, including a crucial five-Test series against India and the highly anticipated Ashes tour of Australia, he felt it was necessary. Stepping into the role once held by Jos Buttler, Harry Brook emphasised that national duty takes precedence over short-term gains.
As Harry Brook reaffirms his allegiance to England, his stance serves as a reminder of the ongoing tension between international responsibilities and the lure of global T20 leagues. For now, his focus remains firmly on leading his country across formats and ensuring England remains a dominant force on the world stage.
