World T20 Loss of Pakistan to India might denote an end to the rein of Shahid Afridi as a captain. Yes, the cricket board has plans of sacking him irrespective of the performance of the team in the rest of the tournament.
A source from Pakistan Cricket Board stated that the Board isn’t content with Afridi and his captaincy and performances. He says that even if Shahid doesn’t retire after World T20, he wouldn’t be retained as a captain. Also, his days as a player are coming to an end now.
He further added that the Board is quite unhappy with Afridi’s media statements and hence, doesn’t wish to move on with him. Sources stated that Shaharyar Khan, the PCB chairman has given indications of current selection committee being dismantled after World T20.
Even though Pakistan wins or reaches the semi-finals, the selection committee that Haroon Rasheed heads is on its way out. The inquiry committee that the board had formed for checking the team’s performance in Asia Cup has already held 3 meetings and discontent was expressed with the performance of management and selectors.
In one meeting, Haroon Rashid, the chief selector was questioned by committee members. After that they questioned other selectors Kabir Khan, Azhar Khan and Saleem Jaffer separately. On this, some selectors complained that they weren’t informed about some of the key decisions and that Haroon blamed the coach and captain for some players that were recently selected.
He stated that the board might appoint a new coach as it doesn’t want to continue with Waqar Younis’s contract that expires before he goes on the tour to England this summer. If PCB considers opting a local coach instead of a foreign one, Aaqib Javed, the former Test pacer of Pakistan may be chosen.
