The ongoing Champions Trophy has sparked a debate on whether India has an advantage over other teams by playing all its matches at a single venue. While some current and former cricketers have suggested that this setup benefits the Indian team, both the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and the head coach Gautam Gambhir have firmly dismissed such claims. However, India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami has acknowledged that familiarity with the conditions has worked in his team’s favor.
Mohammed Shami, following India’s semi-final victory over Australia in Dubai, admitted that playing all the matches at one venue has been “definitely helpful”. He pointed out that understanding the pitch and its behaviour is crucial and playing at the same stadium allows the team to adapt more effectively. His standout performances in the tournament, where he has emerged as India’s leading wicket-taker with eight dismissals in four matches, reflect this advantage.
Critics have argued that India has been able to capitalise on the spin-friendly conditions at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium while avoiding the challenges of travel, unlike other teams in the competition. Under the Hybrid Model, India has played all its matches, including the semi-final and the upcoming final, in Dubai, while games not involving India have been hosted across three different venues in Pakistan.
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir was forthright in dismissing the notion of an unfair advantage. He emphasised that Dubai is as much a neutral venue for India as it is for any other team, pointing out that the last time India played a major tournament at this stadium was a long time ago. He also highlighted that the team had not even practiced at the venue, instead training at the ICC Academy where conditions differ significantly. Addressing the criticism, he remarked that some individuals habitually complain and reiterated that there was no undue advantage for his team.
As the debate continues, opinions remain divided on whether playing at a single venue provides a significant edge or if it is merely part of the tournament’s structure. With the final approaching, the focus now shifts to India’s performance on the field rather than discussions off it.
