Pakistan is currently hosting the Champions Trophy 2025 and it is clearly visible that the Pakistani government and the PCB are leaving no stone unturned in organising the tournament.
However, things have turned a little scary and Pakistan’s security forces have been placed on high alert following reports of potential threats targeting foreign nationals attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
According to sources, intelligence agencies have warned of a possible kidnapping threat from an extremist group, which is believed to be planning abductions for ransom. The focus appears to be on Chinese and Arab nationals, with surveillance reportedly being carried out at ports, airports, offices and residential areas.
Afghanistan’s intelligence agency has also issued warnings regarding possible attacks. Additionally, alerts have been raised against multiple terror organisations, prompting heightened security efforts across key locations.
In response to these concerns, Pakistan’s security forces, including local police and rangers, have intensified security measures. Special protection teams have been deployed in areas considered high-risk and security arrangements for players and support staff have been reinforced in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi, the cities hosting the tournament.
Pakistan has a history of security challenges during international cricket events. A terror attack on the Sri Lankan team’s bus in 2009 led to a decade-long absence of international matches in the country, with Pakistan’s home games being played in the UAE. International teams only resumed touring Pakistan in 2019, making the Champions Trophy 2025 a significant event as the first ICC tournament awarded solely to the country since 1996, when Pakistan co-hosted the ODI World Cup alongside India and Sri Lanka.
Despite Pakistan being the official host, some matches were relocated to Dubai after India declined to travel due to security concerns. However, the other six teams — Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Afghanistan — each has at least one match scheduled in Pakistan. Group B, consisting of Australia, South Africa, England and Afghanistan, will play all its matches in Pakistan. However, any semi-finalist from this group facing India will have to travel to Dubai for the match.
The Champions Trophy 2025 continues under tight security, with authorities working to ensure the safety of players, officials and spectators amid the ongoing threats.
