BCCI Advised Not To Rush In Regard To Jasprit Bumrah, “Champions Trophy Not End Of The World”

The Indian cricket team is currently focusing on the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 which is going to start from 19 February but the big question in the present scenario is whether Jasprit Bumrah will be playing in this tournament or not. If you remember, Jasprit Bumrah had a back spasm during the Sydney test match and he didn’t even bowl in Australia’s second innings.

Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the Champions Trophy hinges on the severity of the back spasms he suffered during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While early indications suggest he should recover in time, the Indian team management has been urged to exercise extreme caution in managing the pacer’s fitness. Any risk of aggravating the injury could jeopardise not only his performance in the tournament but also his long-term career.

The 31 years old cricketer’s condition is now under review by the BCCI medical team, which will determine the extent of the injury and decide his participation in the Champions Trophy accordingly.

The former India trainer Ramji Srinivasan emphasised the need to prioritise Jasprit Bumrah’s well-being over immediate returns. He highlighted the importance of not rushing the bowler back into action if there is any uncertainty about his recovery, particularly given the intensity of playing five consecutive Tests – a challenge Bumrah had never faced before in his career. Ramji noted that stress-related injuries often stem from excessive workload and they require careful management.

If the issue is indeed limited to spasms, as initial reports suggest, Jasprit Bumrah might recover well within the six weeks remaining before India’s Champions Trophy campaign begins on February 20. However, Ramji also cautioned that stress-related injuries, depending on their grade, could take anywhere from one to six months for full recovery.

India will need to finalise its provisional squad for the tournament by January 12, adding urgency to the decision-making process. In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, the team is set to host England for five T20Is and three ODIs but it remains unlikely that Jasprit Bumrah will be risked for these matches, as ensuring his fitness for the marquee event is the top priority.
