The social media platforms were flooded with congratulatory messages as Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL 2024 yesterday after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the final match which was played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
Many former cricketers and experts congratulated KKR, its skipper, owner and mentor for the exemplary performance of the team in the tournament and for winning the title but the former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu who is also a former CSK star not only congratulated KKR but at the same time, he also took a subtle dig at Royal Challengers Bangalore and Virat Kohli.
Ambati Rayudu is a CSK supporter and he was quite upset when RCB knocked CSK out of the tournament after defeating them in their last league match. His reaction on Dhoni’s dismissal became the meme material and he was mocked by many RCB fans.
He along with CSK fans gave it back to RCB fans when the Bangalore team lost the eliminator to Rajasthan Royals and got knocked out of the tournament, thus failing to end their trophy drought for 17 years.
While speaking on a sports channel, Ambati Rayudu congratulated KKR and praised the cricketers such as Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Mitchell Starc for contributing to the team’s victory. He added that over the years, it has been witnessed that the IPL is won when some players of the team contribute and score around 300 runs each and it is not the Orange Cap which makes a team win the league.
This year the Orange Cap has been won by the RCB star Virat Kohli as he has scored 741 runs in 15 matches. On the other hand, four players of KKR scored more than 350 runs in the tournament – Sunil Narine (488 runs), Phil Salt (435 runs), Venkatesh Iyer (370 runs) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (354 runs).
Ambati Rayudu did make sense, what do you say?
