Indian airlines can now charge you extra for a preferred seat, check-in baggage and other services as per the new laws by DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation). You can be charged extra not only for preferential seating or check-in baggage but also for airline lounges; carrying any meals, snacks, drinks; carrying any sports equipment, musical instrument carriage or any special declaration of valuable baggage. You can also be charged for the ability to skip long queues at the security-check gates.
“On the basis of feedback received, it is felt that many a times these services provided by the airlines may not be required by the passengers while travelling. Considering the fact that unbundling of services and adding charges has the potential to make basic fare more affordable and provides consumer an option of paying for the services which he/she wishes to avail”, said DGCA.
