Pakistani singer Adnan Sami has finally become an Indian after he was granted Indian citizenship on January 1, 2016. He was awarded the certificate of naturalization on Friday at the North Block from Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Home and Adnan’s wife Roya Faryabi also witnessed the whole proceedings.
Adnan stated this experience as “life changing” and “historic” and also said that for him “it was the biggest gift on the first day of the new year”.
Adnan applied for the Indian citizenship in the year 2003; he has spent a long time waiting for this to happen and when this happened, he was excited like a kid. He said, “I was like an excited child. I’d applied back in 2003, it’s been a long wait, but I’ve been extremely patient, wanting to follow every procedure to the T.”
Adnan has also said in an interview that he could have got any country’s citizenship but he wanted India’s citizenship as he felt at home here. From this perspective, it’s worth mentioning that he is living in India for almost 16 years now.
