Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has been entertaining us for many years with his superb acting performances and he gave one such performance in the movie Lagaan as well.
When Lagaan hit the theatres in 2001, it wasn’t just a cinematic milestone but also a logistical feat in Indian filmmaking. Marking Aamir Khan’s first venture as a producer, the film was shot extensively in the arid terrain of Bhuj, a location chosen for its authenticity but demanding in terms of infrastructure and accessibility. What unfolded behind the camera was a story of meticulous planning and care, team unity and an uncompromising commitment to excellence.
Veteran actor Akhilendra Mishra, who portrayed the character of Arjan in the film, recently opened up about the experience, shedding light on the lengths to which the production team went to ensure the well-being of its cast and crew. The remote setting required that everything, from accommodation to sustenance, be specially arranged. Temporary housing was constructed and nothing was left to chance when it came to comfort and hygiene.
Akhilendra Mishra recalled how food from all over the world was made available on the set, yet the Indian cuisine was the unanimous favourite — even among the international actors, who had a dedicated continental spread prepared just for them. It wasn’t just the menu that stood out but the generosity with which it was served. From a wide array of breakfasts laid out each morning to unlimited servings of food and drinks, the atmosphere was one of abundance and thoughtful hospitality.
More than just lavishness, the concern for health was evident in every detail. The entire crew was instructed to consume only mineral water — not just for drinking but for personal hygiene as well. Akhilendra Mishra noted how everyone, regardless of their role, used bottled water even to wash their hair. This was not mere indulgence; it was a practical measure to prevent illness in a remote area where any disruption could jeopardize the shoot.
One of the most striking memories Akhilendra Mishra shared was about Aamir Khan himself. Despite his superstar status, Aamir Khan remained grounded throughout the production. He would share meals and conversations while sitting on the floor with the rest of the team, creating an atmosphere of equality and mutual respect that resonated across the set.
The making of Lagaan wasn’t just about crafting an epic period film; it was about building a community. From its global cuisine to its mineral water discipline, and from world-class logistics to heartfelt leadership, the effort poured into the film off-screen was as monumental as the story it told on-screen.
