On a regular basis, we came to know a number of brutal incidents which shake our soul to the core and compel us to think where the world is leading and if this continues, what would be the condition of our country in years to come. We all are aware of Nirbhaya case which was so horrific that it left a horrific impact on every Indian and here seems to be another Nirbhaya in making. We are talking about a poor girl of 18 who is in a serious condition and fighting for her life in view of the fact that she has been s*xually harassed for months. Repeated rapes have damaged her body to such an extent that she can’t walk, sit or even talk. As of now, she has been admitted at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where she is diagnosed with serious injuries in the whole body.
Trafficked 12 months ago from West Bengal, she alleged to be physically harassed more than 10 times daily by many men and she has been going through this trauma for past 6 months. If we refer to doctors, her being s*xually exploited over and over again for a long time is the reason of worsening condition.
As she told Hindustan Times, “I have been taken to Rishikesh, Haridwar, Manali, Mangalore and many other locations and kept at someone’s place where people used to come and rape me. This happened for over six months and traffickers used to beat me up on refusal.” She is having severe infections all over legs to a great extent that doctors removed pus for preventing it to spread further.
To mention what a doctor said in this connection, “The likely cause of infection is repeated s*xual assault. She was brought here by a man who claimed to be her relative. But after her condition deteriorated, the person also disappeared.” There was no one to take care of her and for the same, she’s just at the mercy of other patients’ relatives.
An NGO called Shakti Vahini got the news of her trafficking in April and had been attempting to find her. And they finally came to know about her on Monday by Kolkata Police.
In the words of Shakti Vahini’s president, “The girl has been diagnosed with Septic Arthritis, and displayed visible lacerations in and around her mouth consistent with gag wounds. She lies in a critical state, unable to make use of her lower limbs. The victim has reported about s*xual abuse and multiple s*xual assaults over the last six months. She has also reported about her being used in prostitution rackets.”
The president asks Delhi Commission for Women to inquire hospital records so that the person who brought the girl to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital can be identified. What’s more, he also demands for a caretaker who can look after the girl.
