Travelling in the upper class categories of Indian Railways is going to get costlier from 15th Nov 2015 as service tax of 14% and Swachh Bharat Cess of 0.5% will be imposed from tomorrow.
As per a circular issued by the Indian Rail Ministry, there will be a hike of 4.35% in the tickets of First class and AC classes. Notification regarding imposing Swachh Bharat Cess on all the services that are taxable was issued by the government on Nov 6.
The circular reads, “Service tax of 14 per cent and Swachh Bharat Cess of 0.5 per cent are chargeable on 30 per cent total passenger fare equivalent on 30 per cent of total passenger fare equivalent to 4.35 per cent of the total fare on first class and all AC fares.”
However, there is good news for the passengers who travel in general and sleeper class as the fare for these classes is not increasing. The service tax won’t be imposed on the tickets that have been booked before 15th Nov 2015.
As per an estimate, the government is going to earn Rs.1, 000 crore in a year from the service tax and Swachh Bharat Cess. It also forecasted Rs. 35,000 crore as the earnings of railways from the passenger segment.
