The former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has hailed Kagiso Rabada and Jasprit Bumrah as the gold standard of fast bowling, emphasising their skill, intelligence and adaptability. He believes that these two pacers are among the few who truly understand how to adjust their game according to different situations.
Dale Steyn expressed his frustration over experienced international bowlers who fail to modify their field placements, despite having played at the highest level for years.
Dale Steyn noted that some bowlers run in and bowl six deliveries without making a single change in the field, despite being in the game for over a decade. He admitted that witnessing such scenarios often leaves him frustrated and makes him pull his hair out, wondering why they cannot anticipate what is about to happen.
He contrasted this with the approach of bowlers like Bumrah and Rabada, stating that they have the ability to make an impact at any point in a match. He described them as invaluable assets to their teams and expressed the need for more bowlers with their ability to break open games when required.
In his view, success in modern fast bowling is not just about raw pace or a variety of skills but about knowing when to strike and how to shift the momentum in favor of their team.
In the same discussion, the former New Zealand pacer and IPL coach Shane Bond shared a similar opinion, stating that a majority of international bowlers lack awareness of their own game plans. He emphasised that it is a misconception to assume that all the bowlers at the highest level always know what they are doing. He even advised captains to take charge and guide their bowlers by setting fields and providing clear instructions, as a well-defined plan can make a huge difference.
Shane Bond pointed out that what separates Jasprit Bumrah from others is his combination of skill, rigorous preparation and strong instincts. According to him, Jasprit Bumrah works tirelessly, studies batsmen meticulously and has the ability to use his instincts effectively, which makes him the best bowler in the world. He believes that this rare combination of qualities is what places Jasprit Bumrah at the top, while many other bowlers lack these essential attributes.
As the IPL 2024 season approaches, Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly set to miss the initial matches for Mumbai Indians, while Kagiso Rabada will be a key player for Gujarat Titans. Their presence and performances will be closely watched, as both continue to set high standards for fast bowling in modern cricket.
