A US military aircraft carrying 205 Indian migrants who had entered the country illegally took off from San Antonio, heading toward Amritsar, Punjab, as part of the United States’ latest efforts to deport undocumented individuals (illegal immigrants). Reports indicate that the C-17 aircraft departed on Monday and would take at least 24 hours to reach its destination.
This marks the longest deportation flight undertaken by the Trump administration, which has been intensifying its crackdown on illegal immigration. A spokesperson from the US embassy confirmed that the country is strictly enforcing its border policies, tightening immigration laws and deporting those who have entered illegally. The spokesperson emphasised that these measures serve as a strong warning against attempting illegal migration.
The US government has been increasing efforts to remove undocumented immigrants, with the Pentagon assisting in transporting over 5,000 migrants held in detention centers in Texas and California. So far, military aircraft have deported migrants to countries like Guatemala, Peru and Honduras.
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, addressed the issue, stating that the government is open to facilitating the return of Indian citizens who have been living illegally in other countries, including the US. He also highlighted concerns over the estimated 18,000 Indians who are believed to be residing illegally in America.
Meanwhile, the US government continues to expand its immigration crackdown. On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced plans to revoke deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans living in the US, further tightening immigration policies under President Donald Trump’s administration.
It seems more Indians will return soon.
