An African Rock Python lost its life on last Saturday, six days after it gulped a huge porcupine who weighed around 13.8 Kg. This odd incident took place at a private game park in Johannesburg, South Africa. As stated by Jennifer Fuller of Lake Eland Game Reserve, python should have been able to digest the porcupine no matter how spiky the quills were, as rock pythons belong to the list of Africa’s biggest snakes and have the capability to gulp and digest bigger animals such as antelope. Jennifer doubts that snake must have been under pressure as there was a large number of public watching him due to the bulge in his body.
Jennifer told AFP “It’s not unusual for pythons to eat porcupines, it’s part of their diet. We think that maybe with so many people viewing it, (that) put it under stress and when a snake is under stress it normally regurgitates and brings up its meal so that it can get away. Sadly it did die, which is unusual because it should have been fine.”
