India has several entertainment industries, but there’s a reason that Bollywood is most popular. Not just that the movies are made on a big budget, but also because the language i.e. Hindi is understood in the whole nation and content appeals to people of every state.
The industry that is more than 100 years old started in 1913 with a film titled Raja Harischandra made by Dadasaheb Phalke. It was a silent film, but then in 1931, Bollywood gave India its first film with voice i.e Alam Ara.
From there on, Bollywood went on to make movies which created landmarks. There have been many forgettable films in the way too, but that happens when something is created in such a big quantity.
Today we will talk about those films which proved to be Historic not just because of their content but also because of their collections. These films when released beat the previous records of Highest All Time Business and created new ones.
Note: The films in the below list are from 1957 to 2017. Films from the phase before 1957 are not included because the data was not available.
1. Mother India (1957)
Mother India directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar proved to be a classic film of Bollywood History. It earned Rs 4 crores at that time and the record remained unbreakable until Sholay released in 1975.
2. Sholay (1975)
So, in the period of 1957 to 1975, Mother India dominated the Box office and no film could beat its record. But then Sholay released.
Even Sholay was taken as a disappointment earlier because all the major critics panned the film. However, later the Amitabh Bachchan & Dharmendra starrer picked up and did so well that it went on to beat each and every previous record.
Mother India’s record was also broken as Sholay earned huge 15 crores net at that time. The film had several re runs there after and the business from those screenings is uncharted.
3. Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)
Again Sholay dominated the Box office for 19 years. Salman Khan & Madhuri Dixit starrer family drama released with great excitement in 1994 and shattered all the records including the one by Sholay.
HAHK earned 70 crores net approx at that time excluding the collections from re runs.
4. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)
Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel starrer epic romance and action film Gadar released 7 years after HAHK and broke the unbeatable record. The film was a phenomenon and earned so much money despite releasing along with another Blockbuster Lagaan.
Gadar earned mind boggling 75 crores approx at that time excluding the collections from re runs.
5. Dhoom 2 (2006)
In 2006, Hrithik Roshan starrer Dhoom 2 created havoc at Box office and earned 80 crores approx beating the record of Gadar. There were films like Lage Raho Munna Bhai and Krrish which released that year and earned more than 70 crores but none could beat the record of Gadar.
6. Ghajini (2008)
Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini released in 2008 and beat the record of Dhoom 2. The film went on to become 1st 100 crores grosser of Indian History. Although many would disagree here and say that SRK starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi released before Ghajini and crossed the business of Dhoom 2 but it was Ghajini which crossed that mark first.
SRK starrer Rab Ne… released first but crossed the mark later. The lifetime business of RNBDJ was 85 crores net approx while Ghajini earned 115 crores approx.
7. 3 Idiots (2009)
A year later, Aamir Khan himself broke the record of his previous record breaking film Ghajini. The combo of Aamir & Rajkumar Hirani worked like magic and the film went on to become first 200 crores grosser of Indian History. The film is still remembered for its highly appealing content. 3 Idiots earned 202 crores net approx at Box office.
8. Chennai Express (2013)
The record remained unbeatable for 4 years as none of the film could match the mark set by 3 Idiots. Many films released in the period, which opened better than 3 Idiots but dropped later. Even Aamir Khan was coming up with film with limited appeal like Peepli Live, Delhi Belly, Talaash.
Chennai Express released on 8 August 2013 finally went on to breaking 3 Idiots record. Chennai Express collected 220 Crores.
9. Dhoom 3 (2013)
Chennai Express couldn’t manage to hold the top spot for long. Dhoom 3, which released on 20th Dec 2013 went on to break Chennai Express’ record. So, Chennai Express had shortest duration for any movie to be at top of this list. The audience came back to cinemas and masses gave the film a big thumbs up. Dhoom 3 went on to become Highest Grosser of all time by collecting 260 crores net approx at Box office.
10. PK (2014)
Aamir Khan had become an unbeatable superstar by now. Even Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan starrer films were falling short of the mark. Salman Khan starrer Eid release Kick released in 2014 and was expected to break the Dhoom 3 record, but it fell short by few crores and ended its run close to 225 crores net. SRK’s Diwali release Happy New Year managed to earn 185 crores net approx.
Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan & Rajkumar Hirani’s combo came again together with P.K on Christmas and did the task. With P.K, Aamir Khan started 300 crores club at Box office and put a record of 335 crores net approx.
11. Dangal (2016)
For the next two years again, no one could touch the record set by Aamir Khan’s PK. Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) earned 328 crores net and fell short of just 7 crores. His Sultan (2016) crossed 300 crores mark, but was far away from crossing the mark set by PK.
Aamir Khan did the task again and set the new record with Dangal. The film went on to earn 375 crores net approx at Box office. Even in Overseas it set the fire and earned more than 1000 crores at the Worldwide Box office.
