Ice Hockey – an Olympic game since 1920. Did you ever know that India has a Ice-Hockey team also? I bet you didn’t know. But that’s not your fault as Ice-Hockey is like a dead-game in a country like India where even the most-played game in the world i.e Football gets ignored. A national association called “Ice Hockey Association of India” was formed in 2002. There are many problems like lack of basic infrastructure, sponsors etc. The team practice at a rink which is 1/3rd of an international rink. The only international rink was in Dehradun but that shut down as well.
Government –
Government sends only Rs. 1lakh/ year. They got support from Canadian Embassy in Ladakh.
Harijinder Singh Jindi, General Secretary of the Ice Hockey Association of India said, “Basic infrastructure is lacking in the country, with little or no sponsors, just 2-3 months of practice, you can’t expect a team to grow. The Sports Ministry have said that they can only help us when we qualify for the Winter Olympics or Winter Asian Games. How do they expect us to do that with just 2-3 months of practice.”
Ice Hockey Championship Cup of Asia Div-1
