Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook, has written a 6,500-word post on his wall, which is also being called the mission statement of Facebook. In this post, Mark has given the example of Indian PM Modi and his government to explain how social media network can “establish direct dialogue and accountability between people and our elected leaders.”
Here’s what he wrote,
“Beyond voting, the greatest opportunity is helping people stay engaged with the issues that matter to them every day, not just every few years at the ballot box. We can help establish direct dialogue and accountability between people and our elected leaders. In India, Prime Minister Modi has asked his ministers to share their meetings and information on Facebook so they can hear direct feedback from citizens.”
Mark also talked about Kenya where the complete village was interacting through WhatsApp groups and their representatives were also a part of the group.
He also indicated towards India when he said that a person having the largest following on Facebook usually emerged victorious in this part of the globe. He added, “Just as TV became the primary medium for civic communication in the 1960s, social media is becoming this in the 21st century.”
The founder of Facebook said that for development, what is required is that “humanity coming together not just as cities or nations, but also as a global community.” He also said that Facebook can play an important role in bringing “us closer together”.
He further added, “When we began, this idea was not controversial. Yet now, across the world there are people left behind by globalization, and movements for withdrawing from global connection.”
Mark may have made it clear many times that he doesn’t have any plan of entering the politics but this fact just can’t be ignored that there are 1.8 billion people who follow him.
He didn’t take anybody’s name but it seems that he has written this to indicate towards the USA President, Donald Trump:
“The two most discussed concerns this past year were about diversity of viewpoints we see (filter bubbles) and accuracy of information (fake news). I worry about these and we have studied them extensively, but I also worry there are even more powerful effects we must mitigate around sensationalism and polarization leading to a loss of common understanding.”
