After a surgical strike on Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, here is yet another surgical strike by Modi government. This time, the target is on “Junk foods” sold in colleges. Yes, this is bad news for all you college students who just hate home-made food and love to eat samosas, vada pavs and chinese food in your break time.
UGC i.e. The University Grants Commission has passed a circular to universities asking them to take necessary steps for banning junk food in their canteens.
Jaspal S Sandhu, the secretary of UGC has written a letter to Vice Chancellors and stated that the HRD Ministry has issued instructions against sale and availability of junk food in universities and colleges.
A senior official of UGC stated that
“Banning junk food in colleges would set new standards for healthy food and make the students live better, and learn better and also reduce the obesity levels in young learners, thus preventing life style diseases which have a direct link with excessive weight,”
Universities are asked to implement the following measures;
• Implementing measures for informing students about health hazards of junk food.
• To create awareness among various students about various markers such as body weight, body mass index and other relevant information.
• Orientation programs on various health issues to be conducted for staff and faculty.
• Should create “Wellness clusters” under Students Welfare Department, wherein students must be counseled about healthy habits, exercise and nutrition. Moreover, psychological support should also be provided to them for reducing obesity.
This move will surely help in spreading healthy eating habits among students, isn’t it? It seems Modi is doing every possible thing to make India, the best country in the world. These small steps will surely help…
