What comes to mind when you book an Uber or an Ola to reach your desired destination? Only 2 words come to your mind ‘Comfort’ and ‘Safety’, isn’t it? As compared to those Kaali Peeli cabs, we obviously feel safe in an Uber as we have that impression in our minds that the drivers are well-trained and careful, since they are answerable to the company.
But things turned the other way round for this Uber passenger, who lost her life just because the driver was negligent and drove recklessly.
We are talking about Kaayum Pegu (20), an English Honors student of Miranda House College, Delhi who along with 3 other friends Akshara Badola, Siddharth Pathak and Tanuz Kalita took an Uber to return home late night, after attending a birthday party at Greater Noida. While booking the cab no one knew that such a terrible thing would happen!
That driver was drunk and was driving in full speed; he didn’t slow down even though they requested him several times. Due to this careless and rash driving, he rammed into a stationary truck at around 3 am. Kaayum was sitting at the backseat and as soon the car hit the truck, she got thrown off her seat and hit the dashboard and the windshield.
Kaayum’s friend Tanuz said
“The cab driver was smoking inside the car… He rammed a stationary vehicle at 3 am. All of us were injured, but the driver escaped with minor injuries. Instead of calling for help, he abandoned the car and fled the spot,”
BB Joshi, a spokesperson from Kailash Hospital stated
“Pegu faced multiple fractures in the ribs and a serious head injury. She was on ventilator support. Pathak and Badola are out of danger. Badola has multiple fractures and she will undergo surgery soon,”
Pegu fought for her life for 4 days, but unfortunately, she succumbed to the injuries yesterday. Police arrested the driver, but later the court granted him a bail and he was released. Now, an FIR has been registered against Viresh (Driver) for negligent and rash driving.
As of now, the compensation amount has not been decided! Let us see what happens. But is it right to grant bail to a driver, who due to his rash driving, killed someone? How far do you agree to this? We feel that strict actions should have been taken to teach him a lesson, don’t you think so? Do let us know your comments in our comments section below.
