The followers of Sikhism are referred to as ‘Sikhs’ which translates to ‘seeker of knowledge’ in Punjabi. Here are some facts and incidents which prove why Sikhs are one of the most humble people on Earth-
1. Sikhs believe in ‘universal equality’ i.e., both men and women are equal before God, who created universe and all faiths.
2. The mool mantar or root mantra or magic chant is said to be the first verse uttered by Guru Nanak Dev upon enlightenment. Here is the translation-
Ek Onkar – One God
Sat Naam – His Name is Truth
Karta Purakh – He is the Creator
Nirbhau – Without Fear
Nirvair – Without Hate
Akaal Moorat – Present everywhere
Ajooni – Free from Birth and Death
Saibhan – Self- existent
GurParsad – Realized through the Grace of the True Guru
Jap – Meditate upon His Name
Aad Sach – For He was True when Time Began
Jugaad Sach – He has been True since the Ages
Hai Bhi Sach – He is still True
Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach – Guru Nanak says He will forever be True
3. Sikhs do not cut their hair as a mark of denial of pride in one’s appearance and adoption of simple life. Men bind their hair in turban whereas women keep it open unless in a Gurudwara.
4. Not many days later, there was a group of notorious Sikhs who were protesting for a separate ‘Khalistan’. That microscopic group however, forgot how patriotic Sikhs are! Sikh are known for the undying love for their country so much so that, Indian army has it’s own Sikh Regiment!
5. Sikhs are not only loyal to their motherland- India but, they honestly provide services where ever they live. Even Britain army is considering to raise a ‘British Sikh regiment’ which would comprise of ‘British Sikh’. Sat Sri Akal Britain !!
6. What is more noble than feeding a hungry? There are around 50,000+ Gurdwaras where ‘Langar’ or ‘free food’ is distributed to over 60 lakh. Food is prepared by volunteers and they call it ‘seva’ or ‘service’.
7. These langars have not only provided food to people to come to them, but they also sent gallons of food to calamity struck people when ever there was any disaster; be it Nepal earthquake, Uttarakhand floods or Kashmir floods, Sikh have always come up to help people!
8. Sikhs contribute 33% of total income tax!
9. Not many days ago, an incident occurred in New York where a Sikh man removed his turban to save a little boy’s life who was bleeding profusely. Turban is matter of pride and is not meant to be opened in front of other people, but this man thought could only think of the boy’s life not caring about his religion. He was later gifted furniture by a NEWS channel.
10. Sikhism call for ‘Kirat karna’ i.e., to earn a honest livelihood. It teaches them not to become a burden on one’s family or society. If you can’t contribute to the society, you don’t have right to complaint or gain benefits from the society!
