Sonam is sure that the accessibility of water will improve in the desert areas, especially in the high altitudes if the huge outflow of glacial water is controlled and frozen. For this purpose, he has been creating “Ice Stupas”, conical ice mounds which will work as mini glaciers and release water slowly with the growing season.
He is planning to make 20 more Ice Stupas of this type which will result in supply of millions of litres of water. As per a report in NDTV, Sonam said,
“The Rolex Award funds will support the project and promote Ice Stupas as a climate-change adaptation and desert-greening technique.”
Sonam is also working towards developing a university which will bring the youth of Ladakh and other regions under one roof where they will work towards finding solutions to the problems the world is facing.
Sonam Wangchuk is one of those persons who are not concerned with what they will get in return; he is just passionate about his work.
We are proud of such a great personality and hope that he keeps on doing the wonderful work!
