For teaching his son how challenging life is, this famous Gujarati diamond merchant of Surat named Savji Dholakia decided to give challenge to his son and teach him the actual meaning of life. Yes, this merchant owns a Rs 6000 crore company and enjoys a good presence not only in India but in 71 countries. Now do you want to know what he did?
Well, he wanted his son to know that life isn’t so easy as he thinks and just because they have a high status and can afford everything, it doesn’t mean there are no struggles in life. Now, he challenged his son Dravya Dholakia (21) to go to some unfamiliar place and earn his livelihood through odd jobs.
Basically Dravya is pursuing MBA in the United States and had come to India on a holiday. Now, after accepting his dad’s challenge he left for Kochi with Rs 7,000, 3 pairs of clothes and ‘NOTHING ELSE’.
Conditions for the challenge!
His dad gave him 3 conditions; first, Dravya needs to find some work for earning money but wherever he joins, he shouldn’t stay there for more than a week; second condition put before Dravya was that he couldn’t use his father’s identity. Third condition was that he shouldn’t use that Rs 7,000 he had until and unless it is an emergency.
If you aren’t aware, let us tell you that Savji Dholakia is so rich that he had made it to the news for gifting flats and cars to his employees as bonus.
Dravya accepted the challenge!
Well, his son accepted this not-so-easy challenge and thought of going to some very unfamiliar place where language was a problem. Yes, he took the decision of coming to Kochi as people don’t understand Hindi there and Malayalam is the main language, which Dravya didn’t know.
What difficulties did Dravya face?
For 5 days, Dravya didn’t have any proper place to stay nor did he have a job. He was extremely frustrated. And moreover, do you know what, he was denied job in 60 places. Later, he literally had to lie to the employers that he came from a poor farmer family and desperately wanted to earn something. Then, he finally got a job in a Cheranelloor’s bakery. He kept switching his jobs, sometimes call center, sometimes Mc Donalds, sometimes a shoe shop and guess how much he earned in month; he made just Rs 4,000. Dravya added “I never worried about money and here I was struggling to get one time meal worth Rs 40. I needed another Rs 250 per day to stay in a lodge,”
Now, a finance manager named Sreejith K who had once met Dravya stated “I met him at the bakery and liked him. I gave him my visiting card and offered him all help. However, as my colleagues warned me against employing him, I wouldn’t respond to his calls. On Tuesday, I received a call from Dravya’s company CEO thanking me and informing me of Dravya’s journey.”
